Why Career Alignment Matters

Many of us spend most of our waking hours working. If there is a disconnect between our job roles and our personal identity, it can lead to dissatisfaction, stress, and even burnout. On the other hand, when there is alignment, work becomes a source of motivation and pride. This connection influences not just professional growth, but also personal wellbeing and happiness.

The conversations at LifeVidya are often in response to a yearning to discover and serve from our unique talents and strengths.

We often meet young professionals who pursued courses that were dictated by others, and find they are unable to serve well in the jobs they undertake. Something does not fit or align and either they quit or are asked to leave.

STORY OF A YOUNG PROFESSIONAL

Meet Anupa, a girl of 24 years who faced multiple challenges in her personal and professional life. She tried a couple of jobs post her MBA, but nothing clicked and either she quit or they asked her to leave.

A closer analysis of her professional challenges revealed that she thrived in talking to others and persuading them or helping them. Her previous roles as EA/PA required that she contain herself in her room and work with discretion with her boss. Her social nature was her professional enemy. Every day she battled the urge to go and connect with colleagues at office. This was against her grain and she soon found herself not performing adequately.

A few sessions with LifeVidya helped her become more aware of her internal conflicts and the draining effect it had on her work. In a month, she plucked the courage to question what she was doing and became open to other possibilities. Her job applications shifted to more people engagement roles. She joined a role that required her to connect with potential customers every single day. Something she had never thought of before.

In three months she was an ace performer and happy with her life. Surprise!

Within a year she had landed two competitive offers that allowed her to expand her skill set and bank balance. She is building her new self diligently every day. Most importantly, she is crafting a meaningful day at work. She is happy that her family who would taunt her every day for being a failure is now confident of her.

The above example was a real case we worked with starting December 2024. As we write this fifteen months later, we see how far she has come. Grace always works on those who help themselves and show up with courage.

And we have seen these transformations repeatedly at LifeVidya over the years.

STORY OF A SEASONED PROFESSIONAL

Let’s take the case of a 38-year-old creative professional working abroad. She was feeling stagnant in her role. She spent more time on social media management rather than playing the role of a Creative Director. As the company restructured and churned there was a further pressure on her to take on roles that weren’t aligned with her identity or skill sets.

What made matters worse was her direct boss, a recruit who was rather incompetent, insecure and political. This made her stress levels rocket catalysing her to seek sessions with us.

We did an active exploration and reflection of her stressors and her workday challenges.

As she went through the questions and reflections, she started to shift her focus on what mattered for her work and life. She started to be very mindful of the tasks she would volunteer for at work and started to question if this fit well with her reflections.

Over a couple of months, she had started to focus on more strategic aspects of her role. This required her to refuse some of the tasks that would become her responsibility by default. She also had to set clear boundaries with her supervisor who was getting increasingly insecure as she became clearer of her workday contributions.

In today’s fast-paced world, the concept of career alignment has become increasingly vital for professionals seeking not just success, but fulfilment and meaning in their lives. Work alignment refers to the harmony between your chosen profession and your core values, interests, and sense of self. When your career aligns with your identity, work feels more like a calling and less like a chore.

Through this journey, the following questions helped her align her role better:

  • Conversation with Self: What habits do I need to drop? What rituals do I need for my future self?
  • Conversation with Work: How does my work need to evolve? What micro shifts can I make every day so I can steer my work differently?
  • Conversation with the Future: What kind of contribution do I want to make? Is there a micro step that will take me closer every day?

Identity: The Core of Career Choices

Your identity is shaped by your beliefs, values, passions, and life experiences. It is a dynamic construct, evolving over time as you gain new insights and skills. When making work decisions, reflecting on your identity helps ensure that your work resonates with your innermost self. Ask yourself: Does my job allow me to express who I truly am? Does it give me opportunities to use my strengths and pursue my interests?

Overcoming Challenges

Career alignment is not always straightforward. Societal expectations, family pressures, or economic concerns can sometimes push individuals towards paths that do not reflect their true selves. In the Indian context, for example, traditional notions of “safe” careers can sometimes overshadow personal passions. Balancing these realities with your own aspirations requires courage, open dialogue, and sometimes, compromise.

Conclusion: Embrace Your Unique Journey

Ultimately, aligning your career with your identity is a journey, not a destination. It requires ongoing effort, self-awareness, and adaptability. By making intentional choices and staying true to yourself, you can build a career that not only provides for you but also brings joy, satisfaction, and a sense of purpose. Remember, your work is a reflection of who you are—so let it be an authentic expression of your unique identity.
